What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers have long been considered to be one of the best cosmetic dentistry options. In fact, many celebrities are known to wear them, which gives them the “Hollywood smile.” This smile-enhancing solution has also been around since the late 1920s, and the original ones were temporary, made of acrylic, and could be taken on and off. Today, veneers are made of super-thin layers of porcelain, which are permanently bonded onto teeth that have been minimally prepared.

The Process of Getting Veneers

Typically, veneers require two appointments: one for the preparation of the veneers and one for the placement. In between these two appointments, a set of temporary acrylic veneers will be made for you. These will serve to insulate your teeth from any foods or beverages that are hot and cold as well as serve as a temporary solution for you to wear while your final ones are being made.

At your second visit, we will bond your permanent veneers in place. We will also give you instructions to maintain your new smile. After all, with proper care and maintenance, they can last up to 20 years!

The Benefits of Veneers

So, why do so many of our patients choose veneers? Simply put, many benefits cannot be achieved with other cosmetic dentistry solutions, such as:

  • Veneers don’t require oral surgery
  • They’re custom-made for each patient to ensure an exact fit
  • They can be placed in just two visits
  • They can last for 10+ years with proper care
  • They can solve many dental issues, such as chipped, cracked, or crooked teeth
  • They are stain-resistant

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

Although we welcome dental insurance, most providers don’t cover the cost of veneers. Don’t let that stop you from scheduling an appointment, though! We’re happy to welcome other financial solutions, like CareCredit. Thanks to this trusted third-party financier, patients don’t have to pay for the entire cost of their smile makeover in one lump sum. Instead, they can break up the payments into smaller, more manageable chunks that fit within their budget.

Veneer FAQs

Can Veneers Fix Crooked Teeth?

Veneers can correct misalignment, including mild crookedness. The difference between veneers and braces is the approach to creating a straight smile. While traditional braces gently move your teeth into proper alignment, veneers simply conceal imperfections. One of the biggest perks of choosing veneers is that they can deliver gorgeous results in just 2-3 visits. Braces, on the other hand, can take 12+ months. So, if you want your dream smile sooner rather than later, don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with us so we can determine if you’re a good candidate!

Are Veneers Permanent?

Although veneers are one of the longest-lasting cosmetic dental treatments, they aren’t permanent. They are irreversible, however. That’s because the small amounts of enamel that are removed during the preparation process do not grow back. So, they will need to be covered with crowns or veneers moving forward.

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

There are certain foods we recommend avoiding to prevent chips, cracks, and other imperfections from arising, starting with raw almonds, peanut brittle, and hard pretzels. It’s equally as important to avoid extremely sticky foods that can pull on your veneers, like taffy. Basically, if you want to keep your smile healthy and your veneers in pristine condition, it’s best to eat softer, more nutrient-dense foods, like kiwi, cottage cheese, oatmeal, and cooked broccoli.

Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Do you love starting your day with a cup of coffee? If so, you might be wondering if getting veneers will require you to give up your morning beverage. Don’t worry – that’s not the case. In fact, porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, so you won’t have to worry about stubborn stains quickly resurfacing!

Important reminder: While your veneers are stain-resistant, your natural teeth are not. To maintain a balanced, bright, and beautiful smile, it’s important to adopt good habits, like using a straw and rinsing your mouth with water when you’re done.

How Many Veneers Do I Need?

The answer depends almost entirely on your smile goals! For example, if you want to completely transform yours so you have a completely new look, you might need as many as 10 or 12 to get the results you desire. If, on the other hand, you have one chip that has always bothered you, you may only need one veneer.

Is There Anyone Who Shouldn’t Get Veneers?

Yes, there are some patients who aren’t candidates for veneers right away. That’s why the initial consultation is so important! At this visit, we will assess the health of your teeth and gums as well as learn all about your smile goals. If we find an active infection in your gums or your case of overcrowding is severe, then the road to your dream smile will begin with gum disease therapy or braces.
