Who Is a Good Candidate for Dentures?

When determining whether dentures are a good choice for you, our team will need to consider a number of factors. For example, the number of teeth being replaced makes a difference; dentures are more likely to be recommended for extensive cases of tooth loss. Furthermore, we’ll need to confirm that the gum tissue that will support your dentures is in good health overall. Rest assured that we’ll go over all of your options for tooth replacement so that you can pick the one that’s truly right for your smile.

Types of Dentures

Our practice is proud to offer traditional partial and full dentures along with state-of-the-art implant dentures. At your initial consultation, we can help you figure out which type is best suited for restoring your smile. Here are the basics that you will want to keep in mind when it comes to choosing the right denture.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture consists of a certain number of lifelike replacement teeth, a gum-colored base, and metal clasps. This type of prosthesis can fit in the gaps in your smile like a puzzle piece, thus replacing missing teeth in different parts of the mouth.

Full Dentures

A full denture comes with an entire arch of replacement teeth as well as a gum-colored base that will stay in place with the help of natural suction. This is a popular option for patients who have lost all of the teeth in the upper and/or lower jaw.

Implant Dentures

Implant dentures are unique in that they’re anchored to dental implant posts that have been surgically inserted into the jaw. The posts help prevent the prosthesis from slipping, and they also act as artificial tooth roots that stimulate the jaw in order to prevent bone loss. Some implant dentures are removable, but others are fixed and can be brushed like natural teeth.

How Dentures Are Made

Your dentures will be 100% customized to suit your unique needs and oral anatomy, which means they go through a rigorous creation process. To ensure your new teeth look and feel exactly how you want them to, we’ll work closely with expert technicians at a local dental lab. All told, it can take about four to six weeks for our team to fabricate your restoration. Rest assured, the wait will be well-worth it!

What Are Dentures Made Of?

The gum-colored base of your dentures will most likely be made from quality acrylics, though some are made from nylon or resin. Partial dentures also feature a metal clip that will help keep the restoration secure in your mouth.

Denture teeth can be fashioned from ivory porcelain materials or tooth-colored resin. Both substances are known for having a realistic look and can be color-matched to be as bright and white as you’d like. Porcelain, though, tends to be more durable, whereas resin is usually cheaper.

The Denture Creation Process

The very first step to creating your dentures is getting your oral measurements. We use digital impressions to accomplish this, meaning you won’t have to deal with any uncomfortable gray goop. Our team will then use your impressions to create a mold for the technicians at the dental lab.

The technicians will get to work fabricating a “rough draft” of your dentures. It won’t be made from the materials mentioned above – instead, it will be mostly wax with articulated teeth. They’ll pass this rough draft back to us so we can confirm that the shape is a good fit for your smile. Once approved, the technicians will complete the process by replacing the wax with acrylic or nylon and making any necessary adjustments to the teeth.

Finally, we’ll call you back to our office so you can receive your brand-new dentures!

Adjusting to Your New Dentures

It’s normal for your dentures to feel strange or even a little uncomfortable. It simply takes time to get used to the new shape of your smile. But once you adjust, they should feel very similar to natural teeth.

If you continue to experience difficulties or discomfort after two weeks or so, give us a call. It’s possible your dentures simply need some small adjustments.

The Benefits of Dentures

Dentures remain a popular tooth replacement option thanks to the many benefits they provide:

  • They can restore your bite and allow you to eat more kinds of foods.
  • They can help you speak more clearly when it counts the most.
  • They are relatively easy to take care of.
  • They can help preserve the shape of your face.
  • They can potentially last for 10 years or more with proper maintenance.

Understanding the Cost of Dentures

Because the cost of your new dentures will vary depending on a variety of individual factors such as how many teeth you need to replace and the materials your denture base and teeth are made of, there is no such thing as a flat fee for this treatment.  If you would like a more accurate estimate, you’ll need to visit us for a consultation. Until then, feel free to keep reading to learn more about how we’ll determine the cost of your prosthetic once you’ve met with us.

Factors that Affect the Cost of Dentures

There are three major factors that will influence the cost of your new dentures. These include:

  • The preparation needed before your denture can be worn, such as if you need extractions or gum disease therapy.
  • The type of material used to create the base of your denture.
  • The materials used for the replacement teeth of your denture.

It’s important to remember that when restoring your smile, the cheapest material doesn’t usually translate into the best. Although some businesses may advertise “bargain” dentures, in many cases these prosthetics are more affordable because they are made with low quality or subpar materials. While it’s understandable that you’d want a cost-effective prosthetic, it needs to last long and look and feel comfortable, or it won’t be worth the expense at any price point.

Are Implant Dentures More Expensive?

Yes, implant dentures are more expensive than traditional dentures, however there is a very good reason for this. Implant dentures permanently attach to the jaw via series of dental implants that are surgically implanted into the bone. As a result, they do not carry many of the drawbacks of traditional dentures, such as frequent slipping, the development of denture sores, and dietary restrictions.

Although they are more expensive up front, implant dentures won’t need to be replaced every 5 to 7 years like traditional dentures, making them much more affordable over time.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Dentures?

Yes, because dentures are considered a major procedure, they are frequently covered at about 50 percent by many dental insurance providers. Please check the specifics of your individual plan for more information.
